“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.
“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, Book 1, Chapter 2, The Fellowship of the Ring.
No matter where we turn, things seem pretty hairy “out there.” Less-than-Free Speech. The somehow-still-present threat of war (nuclear or otherwise). A ballooning National Debt. A government that can’t help but ban everything from plants to raw milk. The continued fame of [insert wildly popular singer with a legion of fans here].
We don’t have the privilege of choosing the storms of our time, but we do get to decide how we weather them. Those seeking black pills won’t find any here; I’m interested in the wins (no matter how “minor”), the stories, the people, and the connections. The things that normal, non-crazy people do everyday to make their days just that little bit more free. Also, coffee. Coffee is the little-known column safeguarding our liberty.
I’d love to hear your thoughts, regardless of political affiliation or occupation. Unless you’re a fan of [insert wildly popular singer with a legion of fans here]. Move along. Just…move along.
